David W. Retterbush, MD, FACS, FACG graduated from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA and then completed a general surgery residency at the University of Louisville and Affiliated Hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky under the chairmanship of Hiram C. Polk, Jr, MD. Dr. Retterbush was also a Clinical Fellow of the American Cancer Society while at the University of Louisville. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and American College of Gastroenterology. He has received the Physician's Recognition Award with Commendation by the American Medical Association.
Dr. Retterbush has been in the private practice of general surgery for over 30 years, having the pleasure of practicing with his father, William C. Retterbush, MD, until his retirement. Dr. Retterbush's interest is in broad-based general surgery with an emphasis on breast, laproscopic, oncologic, and endoscopic procedures. His practice involves surgical care for the following:
Hernia surgery
Advanced breast care and surgery for benign and malignant conditions
Colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy, PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy)
Gallbladder surgery
Advanced wound care (currently Medical Director of the Wound Healing Center of South Georgia Medical Center)
Skin cancer surgery including melanoma, squamous cell, and basal cell skin cancers
Sentinel lymph biopsy for breast cancer and melanoma
Thyroid and parathyroid surgery for benign and malignant diseases
Advanced cancer for gastrointestinal malignancy including colon cancer
Ano-rectal surgery including hemorrhoids
Trauma surgery and acute care surgery
Dr. Retterbush is on the active staff at South Georgia Medical Center and Smith Northview Hospital in Valdosta, Georgia where he has served in numerous leadership positions including Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Department of Surgery, and Chief of General Surgery. He is also serving on the Georgia Composite Medical Board providing public service to protect the health and safety of the citizens of Georgia.
